Battenberg Blanket
Crochet Pattern
Materials Needed:
- Yarn: Use two contrasting colors (e.g., one solid and one variegated or complementary).
- Crochet Hook: Size recommended for your yarn weight.
- Scissors and Tapestry Needle for finishing.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Make the Squares:
The blanket consists of small, individual squares. Follow this basic square pattern:- Foundation Chain: Chain 4 and slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring.
- Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet), then work 11 double crochets into the ring. Slip stitch to the top of the chain 3 to close. (12 stitches total)
- Round 2: Chain 3, double crochet in the same stitch, then work 2 double crochets into each stitch around. Slip stitch to the top of the chain 3. (24 stitches total)
Repeat this process for all squares. Alternate between your two chosen yarn colors to create the checkerboard effect.
Block the Squares (Optional):
To ensure consistency and sharp edges, block each square before joining them together. Wet the squares, shape them to a perfect square on a blocking mat, and allow them to dry.Join the Squares:
Arrange your squares in a checkerboard pattern, alternating the two colors. Use a slip stitch, whip stitch, or join-as-you-go method to connect the squares:- For a slip-stitch join: Place two squares wrong sides together and slip stitch through the back loops only of both squares.
- For join-as-you-go: Crochet the last round of each square while simultaneously attaching it to neighboring squares using slip stitches.
Add a Border:
Once all squares are joined, crochet a border around the entire blanket for a polished finish:- Round 1: Single crochet evenly around the edges of the blanket, placing 3 single crochets in each corner for a smooth turn.
- Rounds 2–3: Add more rounds of single crochet or a decorative stitch (e.g., scallop or picot) if desired.
Finish and Weave in Ends:
Use a tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends securely. Trim any excess yarn.
Tips for Success:
- Use stitch markers to keep track of your squares and layout.
- Experiment with different color combinations for a unique look.
- Adjust the square size by adding more rounds if you want a larger blanket.
